The pound sterling showed a pullback against the yen on Tuesday, falling short of the 200.75-year high hit the previous day. Despite this, the exchange rate remained above the psychological threshold of 200.00, indicating that buying interest is still there.
The key driver of market sentiment xm-forex.comes from the upcoming UK inflation data. The UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) is expected to be the focus of the market, and if the data is stronger than expected, it may reduce the probability of the Bank of England (BoE) cutting interest rates immediately, thereby supporting the pound.
A London Forex analyst said: "If CPI remains resilient, it will allow the pound to gain new support in the short term, and GBP/JPY may test the high again."
On the other hand, the overall strength of the yen (JPY) is due to the rising market expectations for the Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate hike. Investors believe that the Bank of Japan will continue its policy normalization path, even if there is uncertainty in the domestic political situation. This expectation provides basic support for the yen, thereby putting pressure on GBP/JPY.
However, the market still has doubts about the timing and pace of interest rate hikes, which may limit the room for the yen to strengthen further.
From the daily chart, GBP/JPY fell back after encountering obstacles around 200.75, and is currently fluctuating above the 200 mark. The upper resistance is in the range of 200.80–201.00, and if it breaks through, it is expected to hit a new high. The support below is in the 199.50–199.20 area, and a break below will trigger more profit settlements.
The daily RSI is still at a high level, but has not entered the extreme overbought area, indicating that the short-term upward action capacity has slowed down, butThe trend has not reversed yet.
A Tokyo investment bank strategist pointed out: "GBP/JPY may be consolidated in the short term between 199.50 and 201.00, and the breakthrough direction may depend on the UK CPI results and BoE policy guidance."
